The instinct is to reach for a free app. I understand why. I also spend part of most weeks explaining, gently, why that road usually ends in a wasted afternoon. Here is the honest version.
The best-known free number apps were designed for people already inside North America. From a connection in the Emirates, they tend to close the door before you finish signing up.
People try to route around this with a VPN. The pattern is plain. A "free" number you cannot obtain is more expensive than a working one at under two dollars a month.
