Most of my clients in Thailand aren't trying to hide anything — they're trying to look bigger. A jewellery exporter in Bangkok, a resort selling packages to Americans, a dropshipper in Chiang Mai shipping to the States. Their customers are overseas, they pay in dollars, and a +66 Thai number on the invoice makes the buyer pause. A US number does the opposite. It reads as familiar, reachable, and serious.
So the search begins for a free US number. Google Voice looks perfect — until it refuses to set up from Thailand. TextNow is next, and it blocks the sign-up outright. A day disappears. Let me spare you that day and walk you through what genuinely works from here.
This is the detail the tutorials leave out. The well-known free number apps were designed for people already living in North America. Open them on a Thai connection and they quietly close the door.
People try to force it with a VPN. Even when a number appears, it often can't catch the WhatsApp code, or the account gets flagged and wiped weeks later — right when a customer is mid-conversation. That's not a foundation for a business.
To be fair, these apps are genuinely useful if you live in North America. Google Voice is polished and free for locals; TextNow does its job in the US and Canada. The problem isn't the apps — it's that neither was built to serve you from Thailand.
| G100 | Google Voice | TextNow | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Works in Thailand? | Yes — sign up from anywhere | No — not available | No — US/Canada sign-up only |
| Price | $1.95/month, no contract | Free (but not reachable here) | Free (but not reachable here) |
| WhatsApp-ready? | Yes — verifies with the code it receives | N/A — no number to use | N/A — no number to use |
| Receive OTP? | Yes — SMS & voice code to your inbox | N/A from Thailand | N/A from Thailand |
The honest read: the "free" options cost nothing because you can't actually use them. A number that works for under $2 a month beats a free one that never exists.
To set up WhatsApp Business you need one thing: a number that can receive the verification code. Meta sends it by SMS, and it has to land somewhere you can read it — or Meta can call and read it aloud. Meta handles the verification; the number just has to catch the code. A G100 US or Canada number does exactly that, from Thailand, without VPN tricks.
That's the whole thing. You now have WhatsApp Business on a real US number, and your personal line stays private.
One honest heads-up: today G100 numbers receive SMS and OTP codes — which is all WhatsApp verification needs — and make and take calls. Sending your own outbound SMS from the number isn't switched on yet; that arrives after US 10DLC registration clears. So for WhatsApp sign-up and receiving codes you're fully covered now. If outbound texting is essential to you, know that part is still on the way.
Once verified, don't leave the profile empty. Add your business name, a category, your logo, opening hours, and a short greeting so a first-time buyer gets a reply even while Thailand sleeps and their side of the world is awake. A US number attached to a complete, professional profile is what turns a curious visitor into a paying customer sending money with confidence.
If your team grows into several people answering the same number, or you want to broadcast to your customer list, G100 also offers the official WhatsApp Business Cloud API as a $10/month add-on. Start with the phone app and upgrade only when you actually need it.
Yes. Meta verifies WhatsApp Business on any number that can receive the confirmation code. A G100 US or Canada number receives that SMS code — or a voice call reading it out — inside your inbox, so you can complete verification from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, or anywhere in Thailand.
Google Voice cannot be set up outside the United States, so it is not available in Thailand. TextNow only permits sign-ups from the US and Canada, which blocks registration from a Thai connection. Both stop you before you ever get a usable number.
A flat $1.95 per month per number, with no contract. You top up a pay-as-you-go wallet in USD through Stripe. Calls are $0.03 per minute. An optional WhatsApp Business Cloud API add-on is $10 per month if you need a shared team inbox and broadcasts.
No. G100 does not ask for KYC or documents for a US, Canada, or Puerto Rico number. You sign up, choose a number, fund your wallet, and activate it.
Yes. Receiving SMS and OTP codes is exactly what G100 numbers do today, along with making and receiving calls. Outbound SMS sending is not switched on yet — it arrives after US 10DLC registration — but receiving the WhatsApp code works right now.
