As said prior, larger fans can push <em>more air more quietly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Use Case:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pretty much any standard chassis from Mini ITX up to Full Tower ATX<\/li>\n<li>The majority of <a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/best-cpu-coolers-ryzen-threadripper\/\">AIO liquid cooling radiators<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>140 mm Fan Size<\/h4>\n<p>140 mm is the <strong>second most-used case fan type,<\/strong> but isn\u2019t nearly as ubiquitous as 120 mm. For one, they\u2019re less likely to be compatible with the more compact PC cases populating the market today.<\/p>\n<p>But even in cases that are compatible with both 140 <i>and <\/i>120 mm fans, most users stick to 120 mm options. While we can\u2019t be sure why, we\u2019d reckon it has something to do with <strong>lower prices and more familiarity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Use Case:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Larger PC cases, starting from some Micro ATX machines and moving up to Mid-Tower ATX, Full Tower ATX, and Extended ATX Towers<\/li>\n<li>Supported liquid cooling radiators, custom loops or otherwise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>200 mm Fan Size<\/h4>\n<p>Although 200mm is the third most-used case fan type, it is more obscure than 140 mm fans. You\u2019ll most frequently see these as pre-installed in specialized Micro ATX\/Mini ITX \u201ccube\u201d cases as large intake fans, where <strong>sheer size helps compensate for otherwise lost cooling potential<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If the case can\u2019t stack two 120 mm fans up front (requiring 240mm of clearance), chances are a single 200 mm fan will be used instead.<\/p>\n<p>Full ATX towers that offer 200 mm fan support are rare,<strong> but <i>do<\/i> exist<\/strong>. You'll usually find them in super-small Mini ITX, Mini STX, or Mini ATX cases, as well as some slimline prebuilt PCs.<\/p>\n<p>At times, you may even come across <strong>fan sizes larger than 200 mm<\/strong>, but the use cases for these are few and far between.<\/p>\n<p>Before buying <b>any<\/b> case fans of any size, <em><strong>verify your case specs and compatible fans<\/strong><\/em>. The thickness of the fan itself can often pose compatibility issues. However, manufacturers sadly don't usually include the clearance numbers for fan thickness to make sure that when you install a fan, you aren't blocked by, say, the top of your motherboard.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_PWM\"><\/span>What is PWM?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>PWM stands for <strong>Pulse Width Modulation<\/strong>, and in the context of case fans, refers to <a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/pwm-dc-system-fans\/\">fans that are <strong>controlled via this method<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is a method used to control the power delivered by a power signal, and in the context of PCs, it's how fan speeds are controlled.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/air-vs-aio-coolers\/\">air coolers can be upgraded<\/a> by simply <strong>replacing the fan that\u2019s already on it. <\/strong>Simply add a better one- or even <strong>an even 140 mm case fan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pulse Width Modulation itself can be a little complicated to explain, but all you need to know is that it essentially functions by <strong>constantly turning the signal on and off<\/strong>, resulting in fine control of the power going to the component in question.<\/p>\n<p>So, you\u2019re probably wondering- <em><strong>why bother with PWM fans<\/strong><\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is: <em>control<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, PWM enables you to control things like fan speeds, or RPM. Without PWM, your fans will simply run at full speed all the time, which also means full power consumption and the loudest noise profile.<\/p>\n<p>PWM fans may cost a bit more, but the extra money spent is almost always worth it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Either way, we don't recommend buying <a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/pwm-dc-system-fans\/\">non-PWM case fans<\/a> <\/strong>unless your motherboard is pretty old and doesn't feature any 4-pin fan headers.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering how RGB factors into this...we\u2019ll dive into that one a little bit later.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_RPM\"><\/span>What is RPM?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>RPM, or <strong>Rotations Per Minute<\/strong>, is a measure of fan speed.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>higher the fan speed,<\/strong> the <strong>more air<\/strong> a fan will push or pull. However, higher speeds mean that fans will be <strong><i>louder<\/i><\/strong> and draw <strong>more power<\/strong>. There are also a number of fans that occupy a sort of hybrid position, offering both high airflow <i>and<\/i> at least decent static pressure, but those are a bit rarer.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re like most people, your instinct is probably to go straight for high-airflow fans and forget the rest. After all, isn\u2019t the whole point of a fan to ensure good airflow?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, but...<em><strong>static pressure is important too<\/strong><\/em>. To understand why, we\u2019ll need to explain the concept of static pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, static pressure isn\u2019t about the <i>speed<\/i> at which air is being pushed or even the amount. Instead, static pressure is about the <b>force<\/b> with which the air is being pushed. This is generally recommended for most users, since (especially if you have proper filters) it minimizes excess dust getting into your PC and causing problems.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>negative pressure configuration<\/strong> is the opposite, where more air is being pushed out than is coming in. This can be good, but it essentially turns the inside of your PC into a vacuum, which will result in lots of extra dust getting into your PC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the best results, you'll want a slightly positive pressure configuration.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To determine the pressure of your configuration, just add up the CFM of your intake fans and compare that to the cumulative CFM of your exhaust fans<\/strong>. As long as the intake is pulling in slightly more than is being pushed out, you have yourself a positive pressure configuration!<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Decibel_dB_measurements_and_noise\"><\/span>Decibel (dB) measurements and noise<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As you may already know, decibels are a measure of sound. What you may not know is how loud decibels actually are, so we\u2019re going to provide you with a reference chart, based on information from <a href=\"https:\/\/ehs.yale.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/decibel-level-chart.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a Yale study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>0 - 10<\/strong> <strong>decibels<\/strong> is extremely quiet and borderline inaudible. The sound of a pin dropping is estimated at roughly 10 decibels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>10 - 20<\/strong> <strong>decibels<\/strong> is quiet, becoming slightly audible at the high-end. If you aren\u2019t trying to show off the inside of your PC, then extra lighting of any kind is purely superfluous.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of RGB fans, you\u2019ll also need to make sure that you have an<strong> available RGB header<\/strong> on your motherboard.<\/p>\n<p>RGB fans will come with two cables: one for the fan itself, and another for the RGB lights within. PWM by itself isn\u2019t enough for controlling RGB lighting effects, and you\u2019ll also need a compatible RGB header on your motherboard.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have an RGB connector on your motherboard- or if you don\u2019t have enough for all of the RGB fans you want to install- then you\u2019ll have to <a class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"CORSAIR iCUE Commander PRO Smart RGB Lighting and Fan Speed Controller\" href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/recommends\/corsair-icue-commander-pro-smart-rgb-lighting-and-fan-speed-controller\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-nojs=\"false\">invest in a fan controller<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fan_controllers_and_multi-fan_setups\"><\/span>Fan controllers and multi-fan setups<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you need to use a fan controller, chances are it has something to do with multi-fan setup woes, especially if you\u2019re building with a more modern motherboard.
