people talking \u2014 for reasons both good <em>and <\/em>bad. Still, we\u2019re truly impressed with what this company has been able to accomplish in such a short period of time; that <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em>, however, warrant a glowing recommendation \u2014 <strong>far from it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anyone who happens to buy an Intel graphics card at this point in time is basically accepting the role of a <em>beta tester<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You should never rely on a faint promise of an update further down the line as the company itself isn\u2019t in a particularly good position at the moment \u2014 <strong>it\u2019s hemorrhaging money on all fronts and has been losing to its biggest competitors for <em>years<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A change in trajectory and fortune <em>is<\/em> possible, but it\u2019s nonetheless fairly unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Still, that\u2019s a topic for a different time and place, so let\u2019s focus on the GPUs themselves and whether or not they\u2019re worth the investment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But first, a word of caution:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Intel_ARC_-_Be_Careful_Which_Content_You_Consume\"><\/span>Intel ARC \u2014 Be Careful Which Content You Consume<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to fully and <em>accurately<\/em> gauge the performance of Intel\u2019s latest graphics cards solely because they keep improving with each passing month.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases and scenarios \u2014 like gaming \u2014 we\u2019re talking about quantum leaps (depending on the title, of course). In others, more production-focused workflows, the situation is quite a bit different.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the thing: Intel keeps updating its graphics drivers at an incredibly fast rate \u2014 in no small part because it <em>has<\/em> to.<strong> It <em>needs<\/em> to keep up with NVIDIA and AMD in order to stand even the slightest chance of being competitive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a result, the vast majority of reviews and opinion pieces and videos on the matter \u2014 the ones that were written, filmed and released mere <em>months<\/em> ago \u2014 should be ignored. <strong>They\u2019re wholly outdated and do <em>not<\/em> paint a realistic picture.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And, by the looks of it, even the content and data we have <em>right now<\/em> will be \u201cobsolete\u201d in the very near future.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you happen to be interested in an Intel GPU \u2014 and want to be on the safe side \u2014 make sure to read\/watch the latest coverage possible, lest you end up with a skewed view of things and an incorrect perception on just how powerful they really are.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NYlTmURzaDw?si=4_ubTxYSBC0D0a21\" width=\"860\" height=\"515\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/noscript><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"860\" height=\"515\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NYlTmURzaDw?si=4_ubTxYSBC0D0a21\" class=\" lazyload\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Intel_ARC_Naming_Scheme_and_Product_Breakdown\"><\/span>Intel ARC Naming Scheme and Product Breakdown<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Intel\u2019s ARC line-up, while by no means confusing, is <em>incomplete<\/em>. The company had many grandiose plans for its dedicated GPUs and yet, for one reason or another, only a handful of them have <em>actually<\/em> seen the light of day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At the time of this writing, only the A380 (6GB), A750 (8GB), and A770 (8GB\/16GB) have hit the market.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first one is the quintessential budget graphics card \u2014 and is, therefore, about as underpowered as it gets. The A750, on the other hand, is more of a mid-ranger.<\/p>\n<p>It's a good option for 1080p and 1440p gaming and can pack a surprising punch, especially when it comes to ray tracing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It's also <em>okay <\/em>for production workloads but nonetheless has the exact same limitations as the rest of the ARC line-up.<\/strong> Iffy drivers and unimpressive software\/hardware support are the bane of its existence.<\/p>\n<p>The A770 is basically a souped-up version of the A750 and is the very best dedicated GPU that Intel has to offer. If you\u2019re after the absolute best performance \u2014 from an Intel graphics card, at least \u2014 the 16GB variant is the one to go for.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25668\" style=\"width: 1280px\" GPUs that are primarily designed for workstations and production-heavy workloads.<\/p>\n<p>There are only three (\u201centry-level\u201d) options at the time of this writing: <strong>the ARC Pro A40, You can already find a model or two on the market, but they\u2019re few and far between \u2014 to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>All three models have support for hardware-based ray tracing and AV1 acceleration, alongside machine learning capabilities. The company has supposedly started shipping these workstation-focused GPUs to OEMs, but they're still not readily available.<\/p>\n<p>And, frankly, even when they <em>do<\/em> become somewhat ubiquitous, they\u2019ll probably still trail behind NVIDIA and AMD\u2019s latest offerings.<\/p>\n<p>At best they\u2019ll be competitive which, while certainly a win for Intel, isn\u2019t going to make any tangible difference in regards to their position on the market.<\/p>\n<p>These pro-grade GPUs have a lot going for them, but until they're out in the wild, we can only theorize as to how well they'll perform and whether they're as good as Intel claims they are. Intel supposedly plans on pricing them aggressively, but that, too, remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>ARC Pro GPUs are already certified for numerous different Autodesk products, including AutoCAD, 3ds Max, Fusion 360, Revit, Maya, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) are expected to give their stamp of approval in the very near future, which would definitely make these GPUs a viable option.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The potential is there, but it\u2019s still <em>way<\/em> too early to give Intel the benefit of the doubt.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For a more detailed look into these workstation GPUs, make sure to check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/aecmag.com\/workstations\/exclusive-review-intel-arc-pro-a40-a50-gpus-graphics-cad-bim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">following link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Intel_ARC_Content_Creation_-_Performance_Breakdown\"><\/span>Intel ARC Content Creation \u2014 Performance Breakdown<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Intel\u2019s first (true) foray into the discrete GPU market targets just a single category of users: <strong>gamers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Content creators and productivity workers, in that sense, are more of an afterthought. Intel wants to cater to <em>their <\/em>needs as well, but it can only do so much <em>simultaneously<\/em>, especially given NVIDIA\u2019s current position on the market (and CUDA\u2019s relevance).<\/p>\n<p>Intel <em>does<\/em> employ its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/architecture-and-technology\/adaptix\/deep-link.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deep Link<\/a> technology to better synchronize both the dedicated GPU <em>and<\/em> the iGPU (assuming you have a non-F variant of an Intel processor), and while that <em>should<\/em> result in a noticeable performance benefit as far as video editing is concerned (better HEVC, H.265, and VP9 video encoding), it is only supported by a handful of application at the Systems<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the surface, Intel GPUs <em>can<\/em> keep up with the more popular RTX 3060 (12GB), although there\u2019s still a noticeable difference when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/best-pc-for-davinci-resolve-studio\/\">real-world performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do note that, at the time of this writing, only DaVinci Resolve has been updated to support ARC graphics cards.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The iGPU on all newer Intel CPUs actually handles the decoding and encoding of H.264 and HEVC footage with surprising ease, so it's not like you <em>need <\/em>a dedicated graphics card (let alone one made by Intel) to have smoother playback and timeline performance.<\/p>\n<p>Intel's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/architecture-and-technology\/quick-sync-video\/quick-sync-video-general.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quick Sync<\/a> is actually quite incredible at what it does and is one of the main reasons why content creators across the globe always go with Intel, regardless of AMD's incredible advances and overall value Can this be tackled and improved with a software update? Most likely, but whether such an update will ever be shipped still remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>H.264 <em>encoding<\/em> is a slightly different story. Seeing how AE scales mostly with <a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/adobe-after-effects-system-requirements\/\">CPU performance<\/a>, we\u2019re fairly impressed with how well the A770 and A750 are able to compete with NVIDIA\u2019s mid-tier offerings.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not better by any stretch of the imagination and they <em>might<\/em> cause certain driver-related issues, but overall, they\u2019re actually quite good \u2014 especially for a first-generation product.<\/p>\n<p>Again, much like with Premiere Pro, going with an NVIDIA graphics card will definitely result in a better, \u201chassle-free\u201d experience.<\/p>\n<p>Still, you\u2019d get quite a lot of \u201cbang for your buck\u201d if you happen to go with the 16GB variant of the A770. After Effects needs as much VRAM as it can get, and having a whopping 16GB of memory (for a very reasonable price) would no doubt serve as a tremendous boon to your creative endeavors.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, Adobe doesn\u2019t have that big of a reason to work on native support for ARC GPUs as they\u2019re nowhere near as ubiquitous as their competitors. <strong>This is something you definitely need to keep in mind.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Intel_ARC_and_Blender\"><\/span>Intel ARC and Blender<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Blender is where things <a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/best-computer-for-blender\/\">fall apart<\/a> for Intel, despite the fact that Blender actually has <a href=\"https:\/\/code.blender.org\/2022\/09\/intel-arc-gpu-support-for-cycles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">native support<\/a> for ARC GPUs. NVIDIA is <a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/best-computer-for-blender\/\">still king<\/a> and, frankly, that's not going to change any time soon.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25677\" style=\"width: 1246px\" Systems<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Their graphics cards might be unreasonably priced, but they sure do offer the best performance for most production-heavy workflows.<\/p>\n<p>Still, if Intel keeps at it, it might be able to usurp the status quo in a few years\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a stretch, sure, but by no means is it impossible, especially if it aggressively prices its offerings and starts pushing out all the necessary updates that would turn ARC GPUs into a truly viable option for content creators.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the thing: <strong>there\u2019s ample potential, but we\u2019re not quite sure whether Intel wants \u2014 or knows how \u2014 to capitalize on it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If we ignore the existence of OptiX for the moment, Intel ARC GPUs are actually a whole lot better than one would expect, sometimes even beating the likes of AMD\u2019s RX 6800 XT and NVIDIA\u2019s RTX 3070 Ti.<\/p>\n<p>In that kind of scenario and setting, Intel is <em>superbly<\/em> competitive. <strong><em>With <\/em>OptiX in the picture, it\u2019s a complete blowout in NVIDIA\u2019s favor. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techgage.com\/article\/blender-3-4-performance-deep-dive-cycles-eevee-viewport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RT acceleration<\/a> <em>will<\/em> be implemented in the very near future and while it <em>should <\/em>result in a slightly more competitive state of affairs, it's still too early to give Intel the benefit of the doubt and proclaim it as a viable option for any Without it, you\u2019ll encounter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techpowerup.com\/review\/intel-arc-a770-pcie-3-resizable-bar\/30.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>disastrous<\/em> performance<\/a> \u2014 <strong>to say the least.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Intel ARC GPUs perform best in titles that support DirectX 12.
