Let\u2019s talk about how to enable it!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_EnableDisable_Secure_Boot_In_BIOS\"><\/span>How To Enable\/Disable Secure Boot In BIOS<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_1_Open_BIOS\"><\/span>Step 1: Open BIOS<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>First, you\u2019ll need to open your BIOS in order to enable or disable Secure Boot.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/how-to-enter-bios\/\"><strong>open your BIOS on most motherboards<\/strong><\/a><strong>, pressing the F2 or Delete keys while starting up your PC should get you to boot into BIOS instead of your main operating system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If those keys don\u2019t work, they <em>do<\/em> vary by manufacturer but the correct key should be shown during your motherboard manufacturer splash screen anyway, provided you don\u2019t boot past it too fast to read it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can also opt to open your BIOS from within Windows<\/strong> by using the Advanced startup method.<\/p>\n<p>First, open <strong>Start<\/strong> and type \u201c<strong>Change advanced startup options<\/strong>\u201d. A variety of diagnostic and repair options are available from here, but what we\u2019re really looking for is an alternate entry into your BIOS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open Advanced options and select Should You Disable Secure Boot In BIOS?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Now, you technically <strong><em>shouldn\u2019t<\/em><\/strong> disable secure boot at all, since it only makes your system more secure. However, there may be reasons you <em>want<\/em> or <em>need<\/em> to disable secure boot for specific workloads.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s <em>why<\/em> you might disable secure boot:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To boot an older version of Windows<\/strong>. Until recently, only Windows 8 and newer versions of Windows supported Secure Boot and UEFI at all. However, Windows 7 <em>did<\/em> get an update enabling Secure Boot and UEFI in early 2023.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To dual boot with Linux or another OS<\/strong>. While some Linux distributions (like Ubuntu) work with Secure Boot, not all of them do. Even the ones that work with Secure Boot can have some issues with it enabled, though\u2014 this is very much a Windows-directed feature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unless you\u2019re trying to use alternative operating systems, there isn\u2019t much reason to disable secure boot at all.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Over_to_You\"><\/span>Over to You<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>And that\u2019s all, for now!<\/p>\n<p><strong>I hope this article helped clarify the purpose of Secure Boot in BIOS and how to enable it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, Secure Boot is no replacement for an actual antivirus (at least Windows Defender) and periodic malware scans (try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malwarebytes<\/a>), but it\u2019s still a nice-to-have feature against more malicious forms of malware.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have any other questions about Secure Boot or PC security?<\/strong> Feel free to ask them in the <a href=\"#comments\">comments<\/a> section below.
