the very first thing that runs on every PC using UEFI, even before you finish booting into the operating system. If you\u2019ve been around the block long enough, this might sound familiar to you already.<\/p>\n<p>UEFI initially launched in <em>2005<\/em>, very many years after what we know today as a \u201cBIOS\u201d was first introduced.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_a_Legacy_BIOS\"><\/span>What is a Legacy BIOS?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>BIOS<\/strong> stands for <strong>B<\/strong>asic <strong>I<\/strong>nput\/<strong>O<\/strong>utput <strong>S<\/strong>ystem and is...the very first thing that runs on every PC using it, even before you finish booting into the operating system. Hmm.<\/p>\n<p>That isn\u2019t deja vu you\u2019re getting! The truth of the matter is that UEFI and BIOS, on a surface level, serve near-identical functions.<\/p>\n<p>A BIOS is just considered a \u201cLegacy\u201d because it\u2019s a much older solution than a modern UEFI, but both will <em>essentially<\/em> function the same.<\/p>\n<p>There <strong>are<\/strong> meaningful differences, though. Despite how easy it is to be fast-and-loose when discussing UEFI and BIOS as essentially-identical software solutions, <strong>there are plenty of good reasons the industry <em>needed<\/em> to introduce UEFI<\/strong> to advance past the limitations of a Legacy BIOS that we'll go into below.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_UEFI_Always_Better\"><\/span>Is UEFI Always Better?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>If<\/strong> your hardware is compatible with UEFI,<strong> yes<\/strong>. If you have the option to choose between UEFI and BIOS, you\u2019ll be best served by using UEFI.<\/p>\n<p>So, <strong>what improvements does UEFI have to offer<\/strong> over a Legacy BIOS implementation? Let\u2019s break it down:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support for storage drives larger than 2 Terabytes.<\/li>\n<li>Improved graphical interface and mouse support compared to Legacy BIOS.<\/li>\n<li>Improved hardware support and compatibility compared to Legacy BIOS.<\/li>\n<li>And finally, generally faster and more secure, all-around, than a Legacy BIOS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Seems like a pretty clear-cut victory in UEFI\u2019s case, right? It <em>is<\/em>, but...<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_Legacy_BIOS_Is_Required\"><\/span>When Legacy BIOS Is Required<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>There are still times when using or enabling a Legacy BIOS is going to be required.<\/strong> This can be due to Operating System limitations, motherboard compatibility issues, or both!<\/p>\n<p>To start, Windows operating systems didn\u2019t fully solidify UEFI support until Windows 7 and 8, and didn\u2019t even introduce the feature until the maligned Windows Vista.<\/p>\n<p>Windows XP and its decade-plus of market dominance was entirely on the back of the humble BIOS, and had no compatibility to speak of with a fancy UEFI.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"UEFI_vs_Legacy_Boot_Modes\"><\/span>UEFI vs. Legacy Boot Modes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So, the above is pretty straightforward, but why does your UEFI have the option to change the Boot Mode to Legacy (Legacy BIOS) and should you use it?<\/p>\n<p>Well, in most cases, you should use UEFI Boot mode, unless you're using old hardware, network boot, or an operating system that does not support UEFI yet. One thing to steer clear of, though, is to install your OS in one mode and, after it's been installed, change it to the other mode. That's very likely to introduce issues, especially with drives larger than 2TB.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the factory default setting for your Boot Mode may reset to the wrong default mode, though, especially if your <a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/clear-cmos-motherboard\/\">CMOS battery is empty<\/a>, so do check the boot mode if you're having any issues starting up your OS to see if it has been switched to a different mode without your knowledge.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"FAQ\"><\/span>FAQ<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Do_I_Know_If_Im_Using_BIOS_or_UEFI\"><\/span>How Do I Know If I\u2019m Using BIOS or UEFI?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Want to quickly check if your current PC is using BIOS or UEFI?<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, this is a fairly easy check. On the majority of modern systems, you should already be using UEFI, but you may be using a Legacy BIOS without your knowledge.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Do_You_Switch_Between_BIOS_and_UEFI\"><\/span>How Do You Switch Between BIOS and UEFI?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>To switch from BIOS to UEFI,<\/strong> you\u2019ll need to have both hardware <em>and<\/em> an operating system that already supports UEFI out of the box.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With<\/strong> these prerequisites met, you should be able to just change your \u201cBoot Mode\u201d from within your BIOS, from BIOS to UEFI.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To switch from UEFI to BIOS, you\u2019ll need to use <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/what-is-csm-in-bios\/'\"><strong>CSM<\/strong><\/a>, which stands for <strong>C<\/strong>ompatibility <strong>S<\/strong>upport <strong>M<\/strong>odule. Thus, it\u2019s been mainstream for a long time to refer to the two interchangeably under \u201cBIOS\u201d unless a UEFI-specific feature is being discussed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The quickest way to tell the two apart as the end user<\/strong> will be whether or not you\u2019re able to use your mouse.<\/p>\n<p>A Legacy BIOS relies solely on keyboard input, compared to a UEFI which always provides a keyboard <strong>and<\/strong> mouse-friendly interface.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Over_to_You\"><\/span>Over to You<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>And that\u2019s it!
