Every motherboard lineup has good and bad products.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, some might not be bad motherboards when considered in a vacuum, but when pitted against other options in that price range, they might start to look like terrible value.<\/p>\n<p>Now, coming to the best brand of motherboards in the market. <em>There really isn\u2019t <strong>one<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>I know, I know \u2013 hear me out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although there isn\u2019t one, there are 4 major motherboard brands that have excellent global availability and reputation \u2013<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASUS<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asrock.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASRock<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSI<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gigabyte.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gigabyte<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A few more brands like BIOSTAR, Supermicro, and EVGA do exist, but their offerings are generally limited both from a choice and global availability POV.<\/p>\n<p>If a new entrant does make a splash globally, we\u2019ll update this list for sure.<\/p>\n<p>So before deciding what Motherboard to buy and where to buy your PC-Parts, let's take a closer look at what factors can affect Motherboard Brand preference:<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Factors_That_Can_Affect_Motherboard_Brand_Preference\"><\/span>Factors That Can Affect Motherboard Brand Preference<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While a major brand might offer incredible value products when it's launching one series of boards this year,<strong> the same brand might deliver insanely overpriced\/terrible products the very next year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I always recommend not making the motherboard brand a factor <em>at all<\/em> when picking a motherboard for your PC.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there are a few valid reasons that can cause you to lean towards one brand over the other.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the BIOS experience\/interface<\/li>\n<li>BIOS update frequency<\/li>\n<li>RGB software<\/li>\n<li>stable BIOS releases<\/li>\n<li>warranty\/RMA experience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Warranty_ClaimsRMA_Experience\"><\/span>Warranty Claims\/RMA Experience<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I know several PC builders who went through an ordeal when trying to return their motherboard under warranty while others enjoyed a smooth ride.<\/p>\n<p>The kicker? <em>They were all dealing with the same brand.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the EU and UK, strong consumer laws ensure that the responsibility of honoring a warranty resides with the business that SOLD you your product.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not the manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you\u2019re a resident of EU\/UK, you can safely ignore this factor and focus on buying from a retailer that you trust.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll be the ones handling any warranty claims.<\/p>\n<p>However, the rest of the world isn\u2019t as lucky. Take a closer look at the dates here. Gigabyte only updated to AGESA 1.2.0.0 in March 2021! On the other hand, MSI and ASUS both pushed updates in February 2021.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering why this matters, I invite you to take a quick look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anandtech.com\/show\/16498\/amd-usb-connectivity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USB disconnection issues<\/a> users reported with AMD processors.<\/p>\n<p>A fix for issues such as that one is often released by the CPU manufacturer, but the onus is on motherboard manufacturers to issue prompt BIOS updates for their motherboards.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re deciding on a motherboard brand, make sure you go back at least a couple of generations and check whether those boards still receive timely updates. Brands can speed up or slow down at any time, so it\u2019s important to check when making a purchase.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"RGB_Software\"><\/span>RGB Software<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Before we go over this part, let me make it very clear \u2013 <strong>no major motherboard manufacturer makes decent software<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re all very horrible and unintuitive to use, in my opinion.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And that king, is <strong>ASUS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re going to be using a lot of lighting, I would pay attention to the software you\u2019ll have to deal with to get it working the way you want.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, when you add in other hardware peripherals and their respective RGB software into the mix, there\u2019s really no way of telling what\u2019s going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of all RGB software by brand:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asus.com\/campaign\/aura\/global\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASUS Aura Sync<\/a> (Now bundled with <a href=\"https:\/\/rog.asus.com\/us\/innovation\/armoury_crate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASUS Armoury Crate<\/a> for ROG motherboards)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asrock.com\/microsite\/PolychromeRGB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASRock Polychrome Sync<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gigabyte.com\/MicroSite\/512\/rgb2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gigabyte RGB Fusion<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msi.com\/Landing\/mystic-light-rgb-gaming-pc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSI Mystic Light Sync<\/a> (Now bundled with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msi.com\/Landing\/dragon-center-download\/nb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSI Dragon Center<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ve (unfortunately) had the displeasure of using all these RGB software. From my personal experience, only ASUS worked the way I needed it to without going nuts. It was far from a pleasant experience, but it worked the way I wanted it to.<\/p>\n<p>The others did work, but it needed a lot of tinkering and reinstalls to get them going.<\/p>\n<p>Gigabyte's RGB Fusion definitely stands out as the one app that I couldn\u2019t actually USE with my B350 motherboard. Running the RGB Fusion application for my Gigabyte motherboard instantly sent my system into a blue screen every single time.<\/p>\n<p>I tried BIOS updates, reinstalls, etc. No luck. After a while, I gave up trying to set lighting and left it on default.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note \u2013 I haven\u2019t used Gigabyte\u2019s RGB Fusion after the B350 era, so things hopefully aren\u2019t as bad now. But I can\u2019t say for sure. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/g100.us\/how-to-build-a-pc\/\">building a PC<\/a>, there\u2019s already a near-limitless number of combinations you can pick. Add peripherals into the picture, and you increase that number exponentially.<\/p>\n<p>This is why the RGB software experience can vary so wildly between users. It\u2019s also why motherboard manufacturers have a challenging time addressing all issues.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Flashing_BIOS_Without_a_CPU\"><\/span>Flashing BIOS Without a CPU<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The ability to flash your BIOS without a CPU installed is critical when a motherboard supports more than a single generation of processors.<\/p>\n<p>AMD\u2019s AM4 socket has lasted years now, and this feature is almost a necessity at this point when buying an AMD motherboard.<\/p>\n<p>However, there\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Board manufacturers pick weird or very similar names to advertise this useful feature and it confuses the hell out of everyone. Don\u2019t you just hate marketing at times?<\/p>\n<p>Since we\u2019re talking about motherboard brands, I thought it\u2019d be an apt place to list the feature names that indicate<strong> CPU-less BIOS updates<\/strong> \u2013<\/p>\n<h4>ASRock: \u2019BIOS Flashback\u2019<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Not to be confused with Instant Flash<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>ASUS: \u2018BIOS Flashback\u2019<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Not to be confused with ASUS Crash Free BIOS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Gigabyte: \u2018Q-Flash PLUS\u2019<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>There\u2019s a special place in hell for Gigabyte for this one \u2013 please don\u2019t confuse the CPU-less BIOS update feature with what they call just \u2018Q-Flash.\u2019 The &#8216;PLUS' is important.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>MSI: \u2018Flash BIOS\u2019<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Can\u2019t be confused with anything else because no other BIOS-related feature is advertised on its motherboard specification pages. Not just motherboards, they\u2019re a respected competitor in markets like laptops, smartphones, and peripherals among so many other things.<\/p>\n<p>The ROG or Republic of Gamers branding certainly carried some serious weight for many years after ASUS launched it well over a decade ago in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>The products cost more, but no other manufacturer could really compete with the quality on offer, so it seemed reasonable that ASUS would charge more.<\/p>\n<p>Lately, though, the price premium doesn\u2019t really seem worth it. In fact, most people now refer to it as the \u2018ASUS tax\u2019 on products. It\u2019s not just motherboards. Keep checking.<\/p>\n<p>If decent RGB control is an important aspect of your motherboard purchase, I\u2019d recommend leaning towards ASUS as much as possible.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gigabyte\"><\/span>Gigabyte<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Established back in 1986, Gigabyte is one of the oldest brands on this list. However, on some boards Gigabyte decides (for some bizarre reason) to go with automated DualBIOS \u2013 leaving it to switch automatically when there\u2019s an \u2018issue.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s torture if you\u2019re doing things like dialing in memory timings or troubleshooting a RAM problem that may have you restarting your PC more than once. You'll end up on the wrong (usually older) BIOS and wonder what happened.<\/p>\n<p>If a Gigabyte motherboard specifications page mentions \u2018DualBIOS,\u2019 make sure a physical button accompanies it on the board so you're in charge.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"MSI\"><\/span>MSI<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Along with Gigabyte, MSI is the oldest brand among the top motherboard brands in the world and was founded in 1986 as well.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to motherboards, MSI usually has \u2018decent\u2019 products.
